We are student volunteers from Singapore Red Cross Society. With the slowing economy and rising inflation, we realized that many Singaporeans were badly affected, especially the low-income families and the elderly. Hence, we initiated this idea of collecting rice for the needy.

Vision

Project R.I.C.E stands for:

Reach out to care for the needy

Inspire the youths – our next generation of leaders - to enjoy doing voluntary work

Champion the cause of the needy

Ensure the long-term sustainability of the rice project

Background

In 2009, Project R.I.C.E was evolved from two smaller rice projects conducted in 2008. The beneficiaries then were from the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) and Care Corner. We are very heartened to note that the two rice projects held in 2008 received overwhelming response from the public and touched many beneficiaries’ lives. The project in 2009 was met with overwhelming response and support from the public, a total of 40,715kg of rice was collected over the two-day event - 35% more than the original collection targeted. The rice collected was distributed to a  minimum of 6400 beneficiaries from 14 welfare organisations.

This year, Project R.I.C.E 2010  is helmed by a team of dedicated youth volunteers in collaboration with Red Cross. Through this event, we aim to reach out to 90,000 households so that we are able to collect 42,000 kg of rice and eventually benefit 8,400 needy.

The theme for this year  is "Grains of Love." It symbolizes our wish to spread the message of love and hope to the needy and nurture the spirit of volunteerism in youths via their involvement in this project.
